The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Curiosity led me into watching this film. This is one of those unique fiction films that's really interesting. The story began with old Daisy (Cate BLanchett) about to die on a hospital bed with her daughter Caroline (Juia Ormond) on her side. She asked her daughter to read the diary of Benjamin Button.

"I was born under unusual circumstances." That was the first statement said by Benjamin. It was indeed unusual since he lived his life backwards. On November 11, 1918 in New Orleans, a mother died after giving birth to an elderly baby. As soon as his dad, Thomas Button, saw his appearance as an 86-year old baby, Thomas took Benjamin away and abandoned him outside the porch of a nursing home. The couple Queenie and Tizzy who work at the nursing home adopted him and took care of him until the time he was able and grew younger. Queenie was even told by the doctor that the baby is not going to live longer so she took extra care of Benjamin and loved him unconditionally.

It's really odd watching him grow young especially when he calls Queenie "mommy". He does look like the old people around him yet since he is a child by heart and by his real age, he really would love to play with kids. During the time when Benjamin was on his 70's, he met young Daisy whose grandma lives in the nursing home. Benjamin and Daisy plays together and were also together everytime Daisy's grandma reads from a story book. I really find the old Benjamin cute especially when he asks the grandma to read the story again! "Read it again, please!."

Later on, Benjamin decided to look for a job and left the nursing home. He promised Daisy to send her a post card of all the places he goes to. He worked on a tugboat owned by the obnoxious Captain Mike (Jared Harris). Right after he learned that Benjamin hasn't been with a woman ever (since he doesn't know Benjamin's case), he brought Benjamin at a bar that in-houses prostitutes. During these visits at that bar, this is also when he meets Thomas Button. They became friends since Thomas didn't reveal his true relationship to Benjamin yet.

After a few years (he still looked old, though) he met a married woman - Elizabeth Abbott (Tilda Swinton) and fell in love with her. They had an affair and only meets in the lobby of the hotel every night. Elizabeth's husband who was a British spy had no idea about the affair. The fling was cut short since Elizabeth left one morning leaving Benjamin a note and a broken heart. The note said "It was nice to have met you."

The tugboat was caught up in World War II. Most of the sailors on-board the tugboat died including Captain Mike. Benjamin, of course, survived and was saddened because of the tragedy. But when he saw a hummingbird, he right away thought it was Captain Mike's spirit that's in the bird. So he viewed death in a different way since then.

Benjamin returns to his hometown in 1945 and meets with the dying Thomas. The latter reveals he is Benjamin's father and bequeaths all his properties to his son including the house and the button business that his family handed down to him. Benjamin was upset at first. But before his dad died, Benjamin brought him to the his favorite lakeshore where he views the beautiful sunrise.
Daisy was 27 at the time Benjamin was back on the nursing home. He still looked a bit old. He learned that his beautiful friend has become a successful dancer in New York. He went there to watch one of her performances but was disappointed when he found out that Daisy is inlove with a young fellow dancer.

One day, Benjamin received a telegram from Daisy's friend telling him that Daisy met an accident in Paris. He immediately went there and the visit surprised Daisy. He looked younger at that time and Daisy couldn't help but say "You're perfect!" Yet she turned him away and told him to get out of her life. Although Daisy was able to regain her ability to walk, she can no longer go back to her dancing carreer. She then went back to New Orleans and met Benjamin there. This time they fell in love. Romance began and they lived together for the moment. They enjoyed their time together since that was basically the time when their physical age met.

The couple's issues mostly centered on Benjamin getting younger while Daisy getting older. The issue grew intense when Daisy gave birth to a beautiful girl named Caroline.

Since Caroline was the one reading the diary aloud, she herself was shocked. This is her mom's way of telling her that her dad was Benjamin Button. She stopped reading, and realized she needed fresh air. At that time, since Hurricane Katrina is approaching, the sound of thunder contributes to the anxiety that Caroline is felt after knowing the truth about his "real dad". After a few minutes she went back to continue reading the diary.

Benjamin love Caroline so much but then he knew well that he can't be a "real father" to her because of his reverse age. So he sold the remaining properties that he inherited from his dad.

Caroline saw all the post cards that his father kept for her birthdays. This part is so touching especially when he tells Caroline all the things that he wanted to do for her while she was growing up. Like how he wished he could teach her how to play the piano, or that he could show him that he loves her very much.

Benjamin grew younger and he travelled to different countries around the world. He came back as a young Benjamin on his 20's on 1980. At this time, Daisy was already married to a widower. He was even introduced to Caroline whom at that time was 12 years old. He then departed once again and grew younger.

One day, after a few years, Daisy found out that Benjamin was back in the nursing home. He was on his pre-teen and has the symptoms of dementia wherein he could barely remember his past. He doesn't even remember Daisy anymore.

Daisy moved in the nursing home and took care of Benjamin. He became hard-headed confused five-year old boy who wanted to fly from the roof. He grew younger and younger until he became an infant.

Benjamin died as an infant in Daisy's arms in the spring of 2003. Daisy believed that Benjamin recognized her when he stared at him for a moment before he died.

Right after Caroline ended reading the diary, Daisy died and Hurricane Katrina is already in town. Before she left the room where her mom is laid, Caroline saw the hummingbird tapping outside the window. She knew right then and there that it was his father.

I'm An American Idol Fanatic!

I watched American Idol last night. It was one of those audition episodes full of funny, outrageous and heart-warming acts. Last night, they were in Salt Lake City, Utah. It is were David Archuleta, one of the finalists last season, grew up. People there were nice - super polite and courteous because no matter how bad or mean Simon's comments were for them, they just responded with a smile and a thank you.

The funniest act for me was the Pink bunny rabbit! hahaha! I can't remember their names but the bunny is really cute! The judges were quite disturbed by the presence of the bunny during his bestfriend's audition. But I think Simon had a great time there. He even gave Pink bunny rabbit a big hug!

Megan Corkrey is my favorite amongst all the other contestants. Aside from the pretty face and the cool vibe on her, she really has this unique voice. She sang "Can't Help Loving That Man of Mine in a husky yet sexy voice. Simon even gave him the famous line - "You are one of the few I'm gonna remember" aside from telling her that she's different. This is what I like about Simon. He's the "extremes" when it comes to giving comments to the contestants. He says beautiful and motivating lines when he likes a performer and gets so mean whenever it's the contrary. Either way, I still love Simon!

Last night's episode the judges were able to say yes to 7 aspirants. They are going to pursue their dream in Hollywood and will do their best to be the next American Idol.

As for me, I'll be looking forward to the competition this season. Maybe not like the anticipation I had last season (since I got head over heels in love with David Cook! Lol!) or it could also be the same enthusiasm if ever I set my eyes on one of the finalists of this season.

If I only live in the United States, I would really love to join this reality show!

Blog Updates...

A lot has happened yet this blog hasn't been updated. I apologize to the frequent visitors and droppers of this hibernating blog. But I'm gonna make it up to you guys!

Here's for starters.

For Barack Obama's inauguration last Tuesday, I would like to say congratulations to not just all Americans but all of us for our new President who sworn to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution. Good luck to you Mr. President! I hope you won't fail reconstructing the economy and I also hope we can overcome the global crises in your leadership. I believe in you Mr. President!

I also would like to congratulate our very own (Filipino talent) Ms. Charice Pempengco who sang "God Bless AMerica" at the Pre-inauguration Ball. She got another standing ovation after the song! Way to go Charice! You make us really proud!

To our Chinese friends, Kung Hei Fat Choi!!! Err... I hope it's not too late for me to greet! Lol!

Happy year of the ox!!!

And yeah, there's gonna be a solar eclipse later on. I hope I won't be stubborn enough to witness it! Lol!

May we have a great and blessed week!

Sound Tripping - Clumsy

Stacy Ferguson, a.k.a Fergie is one of my favorite artists these days. I find her singing voice unique and I really like her style. When she went solo (although she's still part of the hip/hop group Black Eyed Peas), I went gaga over her hit song Big Girls Don't Cry. I actually memorized the lyrics of the song by heart! hehehe... Now here's her song that I kept playing lately and been trying real hard to learn! hehehe... It's entitled Clumsy. You can sing along too! Enjoy!!!

Clumsy lyrics

First time
That I saw your eyes
Boy you looked right through me, mm mm
Play it cool
But I knew you knew
That cupid hit me, mm mm

You got me trippin'(oh), stumblin'(oh),
flippin'(oh), fumblin'(so)
Clumsy 'cause I'm fallin' in love
You got me slippin'(oh), tumblin'(oh),
sinkin'(oh), crumblin'(so)
Clumsy 'cause I'm fallin' in love
So in love with you

Can't help it
The girl can't help it(no,no) [repeat 3x]
Can't help it

Can't breath
When you touch my sleeve
But I fly so crazy, mm mm
Whoa now, think I'm goin' down
Friends don't know whats with me, mm mm

Can't help it
The girl can't help it(no,no) [repeat 3x]
Can't help it

You know, this isn't the first time this has happened to me
This love sick thing I like serious relationships and a
A girl like me don't stay single for long
'Cause every time my boyfriend and I break up
My world is crushed and I'm all alone
The love bug crawls right back up and bites me and I'm back

Can't help it
The girl can't help it [repeat 3x]
Can't help it
Can't help it
The girl can't help it [repeat 3x]
Can't help it

Clumsy 'cause I'm fallin' in love
You got me slippin'(oh), tumblin'(oh),
sinkin'(oh), crumblin'(oh)
Clumsy 'cause I'm fallin' in love
So in love with you
So in love with you
So in love with you

Brandon Zyl Cruz

When I went home last October, I wasn't able to hug my little brother's baby - Brandon Zyl, because I was sick. He was so adorable back then and I felt really bad because I can't even kiss him on the cheek. That is why this homecoming is memorable for me because I now got the chance to cuddle baby Brandon. I met up with my brother's family at the mall on the first week of January. Brandon was so sleepy here.
Aunt Ally! Stop Squeezing me!!! Urrrggghh!!!

Aren't we done yet???

Baby Brandon, my brother Florante and his wife Joy

He can't help his drowsiness that he haven't even finished the pictorial! Lol! Isn't he adorable?

MMFF Entries

Metro Manila Film Festival is an annual film festival which runs every December of the year. All films that are produced locally here in the Philippines are basically the films available on all theatres. Foreign films are not allowed to be shown while the MMFF is ongoing. This festival is also much awaited by Filipinos since this is the time when movies are of high regard since they are well budgeted.

I haven't had the chance to watch any of these films yet because I've been caught by the holiday craze. Ellaine and I are planning to see some of these movies though. First on the line up would be Baler since it is the movie that has grabbed most of the awards this year. Below are the official entries of the MMFF 2008. The synopsis of each movies may help you find which of them you would want to watch:

1. Dayo- A first-time digital animation that Filipinos should be proud of. It is about an 11-year old boy who is out to save his abducted grandparents in the mystical land called Elementalia which is a place where Philippine mythical creatures and enchanted elements reside.

2. Baler
- A film highlighting a love story of a couple caught up during the spanish era on the 19th century. At this time, Filipinos are about to end the Spanish sovereignty. The couple's love will be put into test since both of them belong to two different worlds (a beautiful Filipina and a stunning Spanish soldier).

3. Desperadas 2
- Four beautiful sisters plus an unexpected half sister adding up to their quite-messy yet hilarious life. Sisters are reunited once again and are faced with new dizzying issues.

4. Shake, Rattle and Roll X
- The tenth season of Regal Entertainment's horror trilogy that began on 1984 and one of those horror flicks that once scared me so much when I was a kid. The trilogy's episodes this time are: "Nieves", "Emergency", and "Class Picture".

5. Magkaibigan
- A story of two bestfriends, one is diagnosed with cancer. The friendship was put into test during the course of the treatment. The movie shows how friendship remains and how it brings strength amidst the pain brought about by cancer.
6. One Night Only- A sexy film showcasing sexy casts. A night of chaos and confusion which in turn will completely change the lives of the people involved.
7. Escaleras and Ungasis- This is a comedy film showing the lives of Escaleras and Ungasis after 20 years. This is the 2nd Iskul Bukol film and was a favorite sitcom during the 80's. The casts are the famous Tito, Vic and Joey.

8. Ang Tanging Ina Nyong Lahat
- This year, the Comedy Queen Ai-Ai de las Alas will surely make your movie experience more fun. This time, Ina is running for presidency. She will surely make the whole family laugh on their seats again!

Let's make the most of our vacation!!! Enjoy!!!
